Chess Prodigy encourages girls to discover the things in life people don't expect that they can do
The 2018 Australian of the year, Professor Michelle Simmons recalled what lead her to the study of quantum physics at the Australian of the Year Awards -
“As a little girl I was very lucky, I had a very loving close family and, you know, every weekend I would sit and watch my brother and father play chess. After a few years I suddenly decided I wanted to have a go, so at the end of the game when my brother had finished I asked my Dad “Dad can I have a go?” and he was really kind of surprised, he didn’t expect me to ask and he clearly didn’t expect that I would know how to play, but after about 20 minutes, I actually checkmated him. He was totally surprised you know, he realised that he had underestimated it, and from that moment onwards it really made me think 'Wow there must be other things in life that people don’t expect that I can do, I wonder what they are?' ”
