Competitions within the school can be fun

Everybody likes to win a medal and competitions within the school can be fun. How about year 4 vs. year 6; teachers vs. students; girls vs. boys these are just some of the possibilities.

International Chess Day

At Chess prodigy we have 'International Chess Day' which encourages children to bring along and play with different styles of chess sets from different countries.

Why should children play chess in primary school?

Research shows that a child who is introduced to chess from an early age is likely to do better in school and is better prepared for life in years to come. A study in 2000 by Professor Peter Dauvergne from University of Sydney entitled 'The Case for Chess as a Tool to Develop Our Children’s Minds' argues that "Chess is one of the most powerful educational tools available to strengthen a child’s mind". Professor Dauvergne further discusses how playing chess could strengthen problem solving skills, foster critical and creative thinking, enhance memory and verbal reasoning skills, raise IQ scores and academic exam scores and also build confidence and self-esteem. In his paper he also concludes that the case is “exceptionally strong for using chess to develop our children’s minds and help them cope with the growing complexities and demands of a globalising world….”.   See -https://www.nswjcl.org.au/Resources/Dauvergne/PD_paper.htm
